How the list was compiled:

I weighted the rankings of albums that appeared on various "best of lists".  The rules I used were:

1) Top 10:

To keep it manageable, I only included the top 10 records from any list.  (Most lists had 50 or more entries, and some interesting results might come from using a larger sample).

2) Multiple Listings:

The album had to appear on more than one list, keeping any one list from having too much impact on the overall total.

3) Only Ranked Lists:

The lists I used had to be ranked, otherwise I couldn't score them.  That left out lists like NPR's All Songs Considered, which just list the top selections in no particular order.

4) Genre Neutral:

The lists I used had to be non-genre specific.  Granted, some of the sites tend toward a particular style of music, but I stayed away from "best Alt-country" or "top 50 Electonica", etc.

Obviously, this list isn't totally objective, in that its impacted by the lists I chose to use.  I used some of the major names, Rolling Stone, Billboard, etc., but also included some smaller websites.  I relied heavily on Album of the Year (AOTY), a great site which does a much more comprehensive job of ranking.  If you're interested in checking out a bunch of different lists, go here:
